Introduction
So to start off, let us introduce ourselves. We are two OTs who are internationally trained (in South Africa and Australia) and for various reasons, mostly involving men, we found ourselves needing to take the NBCOT. Up until last year I had never heard of the NBCOT, as such, and was only vaguely aware that in order to work in the US as an occupational therapist, one needed to take a board exam. When the time came to make the decision to move, the NBCOT loomed and after many months of stress, lots of money and energy invested and many Skype conversations, both of us passed the NBCOT comfortably. Chatting to the internet savvy OT community really helped us to conquer any perceptions we had about the exam and to actually study through Skype, email and forums/blogs. As we have both recently taken the exam (Sep and Oct 2009 respectively) we are very familiar with the process and can offer additional advice if you are an international OT wanting to take the exam. We can also explore which resources are really necessary to buy and which you can live without. Then, we can try and advise the best job search strategy especially if you are outside of the US and need a visa and job before you arrive. We hope that this becomes an interactive forum where legitimate, honest discussion and advice is imparted.

I think it is real great that you are doing this! I am a student in the US with 2 semesters left before fieldwork. I am interested in traveling to other countries to practice OT, but have not felt that it was time for me to be looking at the "HOW" to transfer my credentials (once I get them).
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to future posts about the NBCOT!
Also, not sure if you are aware or not, but on Facebook NBCOT posts some questions similar to the ones of the exam in their discussion boards:

Thanks for the heads up about the questions - I'll take a look - I got them from another blog - public property? but perhaps they are not? It's more to examine the rationale behind answering them and I do not have the official answers, I can only deduce them.
ReplyDeleteInternational OT! I know the processes for the UK and for South Africa if you ever need and I am sure I can refer you to other appropriate boards if you have a desire to work outside of the States. Where are you based in the US?
Can I ask, how you found this site? It's still new so I am hoping to get some more followers.
Thanks again!!
Right now I'm in North Texas. Not sure when or where I will be moving. I will keep UK and South Africa in mind!
ReplyDeleteI was linked in from another blog I occasionally follow: http://otstudents.blogspot.com/
Hi again, yes I know the blog - it's under the links section actually. It seems to have spiraled since it's posting by the author is 2007. Well before you go anywhere, I'm sure you would want to take and pass the NBCOT, so let me know if you need any helps when the time comes :)
ReplyDeleteOne more site for your links is http://nbcotexam.blogspot.com. It's a bunch of free practice questions people post.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI an Ocuupational Therapist from India.Passed TOEFL few months ago, will be applying to NBCOT for OTED.It's been years since I graduated.I was wondering how to start preparing for the NBCOT exam??Shall I brush up my fundamentals/basics first or start reading the guides??
Hi there! Thanks for the post. Yes I think the key to passing this exam is studying the fundamentals before even considering the study guides. Go to the essential textbooks for NBCOT on this blog. Having not been educated in the States, you may find your OT programme had a different focus to what the NBCOT will focus on and that is why the textbooks listed which are all American I think, will be a great way to see what is expected. Plus most of the questions on the NBCOT stem from concepts in those books. Learn the fundamentals in each section and then use the study guides as revision and for practice questions. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteThank you Julie!Fortunately in India we used to study from textbooks like Willard & Spackman, pedrettii etc.Since I am not a post grad, I have to fill masters equivalence form and apply for OTED.Do you have any idea whether one has to qualify all the standards given in this form in order to be eligible to appear for OTR?
ReplyDeleteHi, I had to go through the OTED process too. Did you graduate before 2007? If so then you should qualify to have your education assessed, if you graduated after 2007, my understanding is that you'll need to do a masters in OT in order to qualify to take the NBCOT.
ReplyDeleteHi,I did graduate before 2007 and will send the OTED application within few days.
ReplyDeleteHI Julie,
